Top Tip for Cleaning Make-up Brushes
April 2nd, 2011 by Caroline
My professional make-up brushes get a lot of use, which means they require a lot of washing. However, I’ve noticed of late that one or two of my favourite brushes had lost some of their shine and softness. My MAC powder and blush brushes in particular had lost their famed silkiness; so, given the importance of these brushes in creating a flawless face, I decided to retire them.
Today, while doing a bit of on-line research for replacement brushes, I came across a tip from top make-up artist, Lisa Eldridge, to improve the condition of existing make-up brushes. Instead of using a baby shampoo or brush cleansing product as I normally would do, she simply suggests using a cheap ’2 in 1′ shampoo and conditioner product to cleanse make-up brushes. With nothing to lose I decided to give it a go, so I bought a bottle of VO5 Sheer Vitality 2 in 1 shampoo and conditioner and embarked on ‘operation restoration’.
And restored they are too – to their full former glory! I honestly can’t believe how soft they are after just one treatment – genuinely they’re as good as the day I bought them. I’ve bought some of the most expensive brush cleansers on the market in the past hoping to achieve the results that I got today – and to think I only needed a €5.99 bottle of 2 in 1 shampoo!
If your brushes are looking a bit forlorn, why not give this technique a go – you’ve nothing to lose.
Best practice for brush cleaning: Clean your brushes once a week with your chosen product. Rinse them thoroughly afterwards, shape the bristles into the original shape, and allow the brushes to dry naturally overnight. Make-up professionals must wash their brushes after every use.
