How to Transform Your Clothes with Fabric Dye

Fabric dye is a cheap and easy way to transform clothes.  I often dye garments that have become stained or faded, or whose original colour I don’t like, and usually the outcome is very successful. The process couldn’t be simpler – as my photos below illustrate – and as long as you heed the manufacturer’s instructions, you should end up with a great finished product.

Tip for Cleaning Make-up Brushes

A rubber oven glove takes all the hardship out of cleaning make-up brushes.   Simply swirl each damp brush (bristles only) in the ‘palm’ of the glove with a drop of shampoo.  The glove’s tiny grooves will dislodge every trace of dirt. Be sure to rinse the bristles well with lukewarm water and allow your brushes to dry naturally.

Quick Make-up for Tired Mums

Victoria Beckham is used to having her appearance savagely scrutinised by the press, and in fairness to her she responds with a diginified silence.  But I took my hat off to her this week when she counter-attacked nasty media comments regarding her pale appearance at New York Fashion Week: “I’m not getting much sleep at all. Harper’s not sleeping that well, so I’m up with her, as all mums are, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. There’s not a team of people doing it for me. I’m a working mum.”  I think the woman is amazing; she is devoted to her family and still manages to run a global clothing label – all of this under the intense critical eye of the press.   It’s no wonder she’s tired!

Tesco’s Virtual Changing Room

A recent survey conducted by AMAS has revealed that Irish shoppers are increasingly using the internet to purchase goods.  In 2011, 46% of those surveyed purchased something on-line, up from 36% the previous year  (via Journal.ie).  With internet shopping advancing in popularity, retailers are endeavouring to come up with ways of improving the internet shopping experience for consumers (and thereby increasing sales!), with clothing retailers showing particular ingenuity.  For instance, this week Florence & Fred (F&F) – the clothing label stocked at Tesco – unveiled an on-line virtual changing room, whereby you can build a 360 degree model of yourself (physical characteristics, colouring etc.)  and ‘try on’ their clothes.  It’s an intriguing concept which promises to be “creative”, “quick” and “easy”; so, never one to shy away from a gimmick, I decided to give it a try.

Dressing Your Age: What is Appropriate?

I came across this thought-provoking article in last weekend’s Sunday Business Post, written by Jennifer O’Connell, wherein she discusses the parametres of age-appropriate dressing.   She rightly picks apart the ridiculous expectations that society inflicts on women to dress a certain way, have a certain physique etc. – assumptions which are based purely on the woman’s age.  Furthermore, the author rebukes certain media outlets for fueling these ‘rules’.

How to Choose & Apply Blush

To my mind, nothing finishes off a make-up look quite like a sweep of blush.  Blush gives a lovely softness to the face, as well as providing subtle (or not-so-subtle, depending on the look that you’re going for) colour to the cheeks.  When applied properly, blush can truly transform the dimensions of the face; with a few strategically-places sweeps, you can soften harsh angles, or create contours where there aren’t any.  I’ll do a separate post later on the topic of contouring; for the moment we’ll concentrate on the different types of blush, choosing colours and basic application techniques.

How to Choose & Apply Perfect Red Lipstick

If I was allowed to have just one lipstick colour in my make-up bag (heaven forbid!), without a shadow of a doubt, I would choose red.  I have long-running love affair with red lipstick; to me, it’s a signature statement that never goes out of style.  Epitomized by Hollywood stars such as Marilyn Monroe, Gwen Stefani and Dita Von Teese, red lipstick evokes confidence, glamour, allure, sexiness and womanliness.  However, many women are scared to try it out; they’re concerned that it may be too bold a colour for them, that they can’t find their perfect colour or that they don’t know how to apply it.  These are very understandable concerns.  For starters, you’ve heard of the 40 shades of green – well there must be 400 shades of red!    And there’s no doubting that wearing red lipstick makes a statement.  Rest assured however, that with the following Style By Caroline tips you will learn how to choose and apply your perfect shade of red, which will hopefully help you to carry it off with ease and confidence!

Skincare Advice from The Spa @ No.1 Pery Square

I mentioned in my Maybelline 24-Hour Foundation review last week that I’ve noticed a change in my skin of late.  Curiously, it seems to have transformed from ‘nice and normal’ to ‘combination contrary’.  I  suspect that this change has something to do with the current ‘all work and no play’ mantra at Style By Caroline HQ; so, as a treat to myself, I decided to take some time out of the office this week for some beauty therapy.  And what could be more therapeutic than an indulgent Aromathérapie facial at Spa @ No.1 Pery Square.  Aromathérapie is a range of gentle, natural skincare products, developed by a Limerick Lady, Moira Geary.  These hand-blended oils not only cleanse, soothe and smooth the skin, they also have delicious scents with therapeutic properties.
