Tesco’s Virtual Changing Room

A recent survey conducted by AMAS has revealed that Irish shoppers are increasingly using the internet to purchase goods.  In 2011, 46% of those surveyed purchased something on-line, up from 36% the previous year  (via Journal.ie).  With internet shopping advancing in popularity, retailers are endeavouring to come up with ways of improving the internet shopping experience for consumers (and thereby increasing sales!), with clothing retailers showing particular ingenuity.  For instance, this week Florence & Fred (F&F) – the clothing label stocked at Tesco – unveiled an on-line virtual changing room, whereby you can build a 360 degree model of yourself (physical characteristics, colouring etc.)  and ‘try on’ their clothes.  It’s an intriguing concept which promises to be “creative”, “quick” and “easy”; so, never one to shy away from a gimmick, I decided to give it a try.

Firstly, you upload a photo of your face onto their Facebook app, following their guidelines (no teeth, no glasses, no hairy ears!)…

The programme then guides you through the process of creating your own virtual lookalike.  Credit where it’s due, it was easy and quick, plus it allowed me to live out – well, virtually at least – my dreams of being a hot blonde / ravishing redhead / bohemian beauty…

Once I got over the novelty of having red/blonde/curly hair, I reverted back to my natural brunette look and then created ‘Virtual Me’…

Frankly, I was amazed.  Despite having a disproportionally tiny head, my digital doppleganger is very similar to me in looks, colouring and shape.  Success!  Next, I started trying on some clothes…

Pretty impressive huh?  I genuinely didn’t expect it to look so real.  Whether it looks like that in real life I don’t know but if the above dress comes into stock at my local Tesco I’ll try it on and post some pictures here for comparison.  Incidentally it’s the “Clock Block” tunic and is priced at £16.  You can purchase via the app should you desire.

What do you think of this technology?  Would you trust an app such as this or are you more of a try before you buy kinda gal?  Share your thoughts below.
